INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Joe Hogsett has proclaimed September 15 through October 15 Hispanic Heritage Month in the City of Indianapolis. Throughout the month, events across the city will recognize those in our community whose ancestors originated in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a celebration — it is an opportunity to grow and develop as a community, for we can always learn more by seeing the world through our neighbors’ eyes,” said Mayor Hogsett. “Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, I encourage all of Indianapolis to join me in honoring our sisters and brothers of Latino origin, uplifting the very diversity that is Indianapolis’ greatest strength.”
The City’s Office of International and Latino Affairs works year-round to break down cultural and language barriers faced by the Latino community. The office has conducted targeted outreach, coordinating with local Latino TV and radio outlets and engaging directly with community members at cultural events throughout the city. Efforts to translate City documents and resource materials are currently underway, with the goal of developing a comprehensive Language Access Plan in 2018. The office will also be hosting “Connect with Your City,” during Hispanic Heritage Month, an event aimed at convening resources to increase accessibility for underserved populations.
