INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Landmarks will showcase the 126 acre urban oasis of Garfield Park and the surrounding neighborhood on a Sept. 14 walking tour and a Sept. 16 bike tour.
The neighborhood is comprised of historic bungalows, four squares, and Tudor Revival-style hours on pedestrian-friendly streets that radiate from the park. The city’s oldest park is a jewel, with a sunken garden centered on a fountain, botanical conservatory, bandstand, tennis courts, pool, and walking paths.
The walking tours are 90 minutes, with a group departing every 15 minutes from 5:30-6:45 p.m. The tour stops at an 1865 private home on the south edge of the park. Cost is $10 to the general public, $8 for members.
The Sept. 16 bike tour is a three hour bike ride departing every 15 minutes from 1-10 a.m. The ride will include a stope at a private home and features the 1925 bungalow built and lived in by “Cannon Ball” Baker until his death in 1990. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for the general public.
Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling 317-639-4534, on Eventbrite, or by e-mail at reservations@indianalandmarks.org.
