INDIANAPOLIS — Graffiti is a problem that contributes to increased blight and decay throughout all Indy neighborhoods. For the third year, the Indy Public Safety Foundation (IPSF), IMPD and IFD are teaming up with community partners to remove graffiti from homes and businesses, free of cost.
Launched in 2015, the Graffiti Abatement Unit (GAU) is an innovative, public-private partnership between the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indianapolis Fire Department, Indy Public Safety Foundation, EmployIndy, MIBOR REALTOR® Association and RecycleForce. In 2015 and 2016, the GAU removed over 40,000 square feet of graffiti — all of which at no cost to home or business owners.
This year, the GAU is once again aligning its efforts with Project Indy, Mayor Hogsett’s plan to provide summer employment opportunities to Indy’s youth. The GAU is staffed by participants ages 18 to 24 of the RecycleForce program, which provides transitional jobs and training to people that were recently incarcerated.
