IRVINGTON — On Fri., June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downey Ave Church (111 S. Downey Ave) the Irvington Summer Music Series will present the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. in Texas in 1865. Mayor Hogsett will introduce Dr. Leah Gunning Frances, VP and Dean of Faculty at Christian Theological Seminary who will be the host for an evening that will feature performances by the First Irvington Baptist Church Choir, Nick Tucker Jazz Trio, Folklorist Mac Bellner, opera singer Christopher Wilburn (who is also a sergeant in IMPD), Ed Adams reading Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and Dr. Sally Perkins, a nationally known story teller. The event is sponsored by the Irvington Community Council and part of the 2017 Irvington Summer Music Series. Admission is free.
