INDIANAPOLIS — The FIDO pet food pantry fills a great need in the Indianapolis animal welfare community. By providing food to low-income dog and cat owners/guardians, the pantry helps keep pets fed, in the home, and out of the overburdened local shelter and rescue system. The pet food pantry also serves as a strong incentive for owners/guardians to get their pets spayed or neutered, a requirement of the pantry program. In addition, the pantry serves a large number of local community cat caretakers. Community cats are in greatest numbers in low-income neighborhoods. People are more able to step up and provide daily care for these cats if they can receive support with cat food.
FIDO has many other programs and initiatives also underway now, that compete for the time of their small number of regular volunteers. These programs include a new alley outreach program with Indianapolis Animal Care Services, a care and treatment ordinance educational campaign, a kennel building program, a spay/neuter program, a help line program, and an organizational strategic planning work now underway.
If you are interested in stepping up and can commit to helping FIDO keep the food pantry up and running, please e-mail darcie.kurtz@sbcglobal.net for more information.
