• The Irvington Holiday Open House is Dec. 9 from 5-9 p.m. throughout the many shops of Historic Irvington. Sponsored by the Irvington Business Association, there will be many things for people to do, including listening to the Circle City Ringers from 5-6 p.m. at the library, having your picture taken with Santa from 5-8 p.m. at George Thomas Florist, trolley car rides throughout the neighborhood, and lots more going on. Stroll along East Washington St., Audubon, and Johnson Ave. for the many special deals and events going on Friday evening. Go out and support your local, independent businesses on the east side!
• An Irvington tradition continues at the Benton House with the annual reading of A Christmas Carol on Dec. 12 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This is a free event, featuring the Gable Players who revive the 1940 radio script of the classic story. The reading is sponsored by Bookmamas. There will be light refreshments served. The Benton House is located at 312 S. Downey Ave.
• Another holiday tradition continues at UIndy with the ‘Christmas Celebration’ concerts Dec. 9 and 11. Favorite carols, a Christmas concerto, and music celebrating the season from the distant past are in store when the University of Indianapolis Department of Music performs its annual “Christmas Celebration” concerts. UIndy’s choral, instrumental and handbell ensembles will perform at 7:30 p.m. Fri. and 4 p.m. Sun. in the elegant Ruth Lilly Performance Hall of the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, 1400 E. Hanna Ave. Tickets, at $10 general admission or $6 for students and seniors, are available at the door or in advance at 317-788-3251 or uindy.edu/etc.
• The annual Alternative Gift Fair will be held Dec. 10 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Irving Theater, 5505 E. Washington St. Thirty-plus handmade vendors will be there with all kinds of unique gifts. They will be collecting men’s gloves, hats and socks for the The PourHouse, a street outreach for individuals experiencing homelessness.
• On Dec. 11 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the December Indy Urban Flea Market will be held at Circle City Industrial Complex. There will be over 80 booths of antiques, collectibles and cool stuff to buy, plus select Farmers Market vendors. There will be music, food, and much more going on as well. Centerpoint Brewing will be serving their beer and donate $1 for each pint to support the market’s non-profit community partner, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana. The Circle City Industrial Complex is located at 1125 Brookside Ave. and is home to the Saturday Winter Farmer’s Market as well from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
