Thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and brought nonperishable goods to our office and to Gaia Works (the Magic Candle) and to the community food box at 17th and Gladstone. Working together, we can help boost hope and help throughout our community.
Many places of worship on the east side have food pantries that could use just not the food, but also volunteers to help stock, distribute, and get donations. Ask your pastor how you can get involved.
The USDA reported that in 2015, 42.2 million people in America, including more than 13.1 million children, lived in households at risk of struggling with hunger. On the other end of the age spectrum, in 2015, 2.9 million (8 percent) of households with seniors age 65 and older experienced food insecurity. More than 1.2 million (9 percent) of households composed of seniors living alone experienced food insecurity. These aren’t just numbers, these are our neighbors who are often too proud to ask for help.
We will continue to update everyone on our Lincolns Project: $5 a week can make the difference between someone going hungry, or going to bed with a full stomach.
