Ans Taylor, daughter-in-law of Hart’s Bakery owner Sandy Taylor, is delighted to be working on a unique project: illustrating the history of the 70-year-old bakery, panel by panel.
Hart’s Bakery at 7030 E. 10th St. has been an east side institution since Joe Hart opened it after World War II. Sandy Taylor, who worked as a cake decorator for Joe for many years, bought the business in 1992 and continued to build on his success. “We’re the third oldest bakery in Indianapolis,” she said. “My son and his wife will take it over from me, when the time comes.” Hart’s is also one of the few generational bakeries still around.
Hart’s is known for great treats, and also as a stalwart supporter of the east side, often contributing cakes, doughnuts, cookies, and other items for good causes.
Ans is working on the first panel of the mural at the moment, which depicts founder Joe removing loaves of bread from the oven. Hart built a reputation for high quality breads, cakes, and pastries, working out of another building before moving into the one on 10th St. in 1958. Ans said that she is working from old photos to capture the spirit that built the bakery up from a dream to a destination for baked goods. Upcoming panels will include Sandy as a cake decorator, then her son Dan and his wife Cherice, who runs the front end of the store.
