INDIANAPOLIS — The Talbot Street Art Fair will celebrate its 61st year June 11 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and June 12 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission, as always, is free. The Art Fair is located between 16th and 20th, and Delaware and Pennsylvania on downtown’s east side. Over 270 exhibitors are expected for one of the largest juried art fairs in the region.
The Talbot Street Art Fair started with just a few artists who hung their work on any available surface along Talbot St. The first show in 1956 attracted about 1,500 people. The fair has grown over the years, attracting thousands of visitors who come to say hello to exhibitors who have been coming for years, and seeing the work of new artists just starting out.
Artists in a variety of disciplines showcase their best work at Talbot, and visitors looking for particular items won’t be disappointed. Fine art, woodworking, sculpture, fiber arts, glass, pottery, metal works, jewelry, and photography are all on display at the many booths. Many works are very affordable.
Refreshments are available at food tents throughout the fair, or visitors are encouraged to check out some of the great new restaurants that have opened along 16th St. in the past year. Due to the number of events going on in the area, including the Harrison Center’s Independent Music & Art Fair across the street, visitors are encourage to bicycle in, leaving their bikes at the Pedal and Park area on the front lawn of Herron High School — donations will be accepted to park bikes there. In addition, the local Boy Scouts will offer paid parking for only $5 at selected lots near Pennsylvania and 17th and 18th streets. The Knights of Columbus also offer parking at 1305 Delaware St. during the fair for $10. Proceeds go to support their projects.
This weekend looks like it’s going to be a hot one! Bring lots of water, leave pets at home, and be prepared to enjoy a whole day wandering acres of great art.
