INDIANAPOLIS — A major thoroughfare on the southeast side will be closed through roughly July of this year. Shelby between Morris St . and Cottage Ave. is affected, but there is access to businesses and homes through side streets and on sidewalks.
The Fountain Square Drainage Improvements will not only expand drainage capacity for the Fountain Square community, but it will also improve cyclist safety along the downtown corridor with a protected bike lane. A bioretention rain garden barrier will replace the old bollards along Shelby Street, while also adding drainage capacity to the new separate storm sewer that will be installed.
The project comes after years of business owners and residents calling for Indy DPW to address the historical flooding concerns in the community and several more years of community engagement while the project was being designed.
The project includes a new trunk line separate storm sewer extending along Shelby Street from Pleasant Run Creek to the south to Woodlawn Ave, to the north. The storm sewer will be sized to accommodate future connections from adjacent areas that are currently served by a combined sewer system.
This is Phase one of the project. Phase two begins in 2032.
