INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works and the Office of Disability Affairs are excited to announce a new volunteer initiative for residential sidewalk shoveling. Adopted from City of Bloomington, IN – Council for Community Accessibility, the Snow Buddies program matches volunteers with a neighbor who is unable to clear snow due to disability or age, ensuring access to homes and clear residential sidewalks throughout the winter season.
Volunteers can register to be paired with a neighbor or someone in the area to clear sidewalks and steps of individuals who can no longer do these tasks for themselves. They will also be tasked with clearing snow from the public sidewalk. They will not be expected to clear driveways, cars, or other areas. If a resident requests help with garbage can or other needs, the Snow Buddy volunteer can help at their own discretion.
Volunteers are not to accept tips or payment above a hot beverage and a hearty “thank you.” Residents don’t have to be home when their Snow Buddy arrives, and if they have salt or snow melt, they should leave it outside so volunteers can use it.
There is no guarantee that people can be matched with a volunteer. However, if the program grows, the chances will be better.
