INDIANAPOLIS — Recently, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) marked the final days of construction on the West Washington Street Bridge over Little Eagle Creek.
Originally built in 1916, the historic bridge was planned as a rehabilitation project when construction first began in 2024. However, work crews discovered that the bridge was in much worse condition than originally thought. A full replacement was deemed necessary to ensure the longevity of the structure and the safety of all road users. Projected to last the 2024 construction season, full rehabilitation led to the project continuing into the 2025 construction season.
The work is part of a coordinated push by agencies to make enhancements and improvements along stretches of Washington Street across the entire city. Included in the bridge rehab are wider sidewalks for better pedestrian access. In addition to this project, Indy DPW will begin work on Washington Street between Lynhurst Drive and Holt Road in 2026 to improve streets, sidewalks, curbs, traffic signals and drainage.
After the bridge opens to traffic, minor construction activity will still take place in the project vicinity in the proceeding days.
