Applause!: Nov. 7-13

• The Indianapolis Public Schools board approved a plan to transfer 148 pieces of fine art to the IPS Foundation to create an arts education fund for students. The IPS Foundation will sell the artwork to the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, which will pay $1.16 million for the paintings. The foundation will use the proceeds from the sale to establish the IPS Arts Enrichment fund. That fund will support arts instruction and enrichment activities such as field trips and visiting artists programs.
• On Saturday, Nov. 15, at 3:30 p.m., The Harmony Collected Community Choir, presented by The Irvington Arts Collective, will team with The Lilly Chorus and The Marion University Chamber Singers for an ICAN Benefit Concert. The concert will be at the Irvington Presbyterian Church, 55 Johnson Ave. A non-perishable food item will be appreciated as an entry fee.
• The City of Lawrence Civic Plaza, 5710 Lawrence Village Parkway, has a wind tree that generates electricity for the plaza outlets. Created by New World Wind, the Wind Tree uses dozens of leaf-shaped micro-turbines that quietly turn wind into energy. It is the first of its kind in Indiana. Check it out!
• Work is underway to remove “Black Mountain” on E. Washington St. near Ewing St. The city has cleared the brush from the site, and 1,300 loads of illegally dumped foundry sand. There will be a landscape lot installed mid-November, weather permitting, then the city hopes it will be a suitable industrial site. The sand was dumped from the former Chrysler plant, and created environmental problems for decades for the neighborhood.
• Irvington businesses, including Chicago Beef & Dog and Hampton & Co., have started a food drive to keep the BIG Red Box Project and other community food boxes full during November. Lincoln Square and others are also participating to help those in the community. Hampton and Chicago Beef will also give you a 15% discount on your entire purchase if you donate. Drop off donations at the stores.
• The Indianapolis Public Library will host their Fall Festival 2025 and Slammin’ Rhymes Challenge XIX on Saturday, Nov. 15 from noon-4 p.m. Special guests Drs. Sampson Davis, Ramek Hunt, and George Jenkins  will give a talk, plus there will be music, and much more. Admission is free. Central Library is located at 40 E. St. Clair.
• Christ the King Catholic Church, 5884 Crittenden Ave., will host an Indianapolis Brass Choir concert on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. to honor the courage and sacrifice of veterans. The concert is free, but a freewill offering will be collected to support the Boulevard Place Food Pantry.
• Veterans Day is a federal holiday on Nov. 11. State, local, and federal offices will be closed, and the post office will not deliver mail that day. The BMV will also be closed. Trash pickup will be on a normal schedule. Downtown at the Indiana War Memorial, 55 E. Michigan St., there will be a special service at 11 a.m. with a flyover. At noon, there will be a parade that starts at Michigan and Pennsylvania, south on Pennsylvania, then west on New York, then north on Meridian.
