• The Heartland International Film Festival has wrapped up, with hundreds of screenings of films from all over the world. The winners were announced in all categories. Best Narrative Prize winner was Happy Birthday, Documentary Prize winner was Jimmy & the Demons, and the Hoodox Indiana Spotlight Award was for The Tenderness Tour, Jimmy Stewart Legacy Award winner The Eyes of Ghana, and Humor Award winner Tight & Nerdy.
• Marion County Coalition on Aging will host a Lunch & Learn on the topic of downsizing for seniors on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from noon-2 p.m. at the Public Health Dept. at 3838 N. Rural St. There will be a complimentary lunch and a talk with panelists who are experts in helping to “right size” your life. Admission is free.
• The Soul Food Project will have a session at their Irvington farm location, 6131 E. Pleasant Run Parkway S. Dr. on Friday, Oct. 24 from 5-7 p.m. They will have pumpkins, apple cider, and a cozy campfire. The event is free, but registration is required on Eventbrite.com/e/soul-food-session-tickets.
• Two Hoosiers won coveted World Food Championship awards at the recent competition at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Cindy Hawkins of Circle City Sweets won in the Dessert category, and Daniel McDonald from Franklin Indiana won in the Bacon category. Congratulations to these chefs!
• There has been a significant rise in pedestrian/vehicle accidents in Indianapolis. Safe Streets Indy reported 22 incidents between Oct. 13-19. Four incidents resulted in serious injury, and one person died. Pedestrians were involved in 19 incidents, and 3 involved bicycles. Just on Sunday, Oct. 19, there were 6 incidents, including the fatality. For more information about Safe Streets Indy, visit their Web site at safestreetsindy.org.
• Indiana Landmarks is offering a lecture on Modernist architect Evans Woollen, creator of Clowes Hall and the Federal Building in Indianapolis, on Thursday, Oct. 30 at their headquarters, 1201 Central Ave. from 6-7 p.m. Speakers Philip Cox and Niall Cronin will have never-before-seen archival photography on his many structures. Cost is $10 to the general public available online at www.indianalandmarks.org
• Just as a reminder: Sunset on Halloween night is at 6:43 p.m. and “civil twilight” ends at 7:12 p.m. Yeah, we had to look it up. Civil twilight is the period of time after sunset or sunrise when there is enough natural sunlight for outdoor activities without artificial lighting. Happy trick-or-treating! Be safe!
