• The public is welcome to attend the Indianapolis Fire Department’s Showcase and Fall Fire Safety Festival on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the IFD Training Academy, 9020 E. 33rd St. There will be free food, giveaways, live rescue demonstrations, and safety tips for the whole family. No registration is necessary.
• Mark your calendars for the final speaker in the Osbert Sumner photographs at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 University Ave. on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. Local historian Deedee Davis will present a talk on the Magic Circle, an event that was held downtown in October 1900 and documented by Sumner. Admission is free, but donations to the Center would be appreciated.
• Safe Streets Indy reported that for the week of Sept. 22-28, there were 18 incidents reported between vehicles and pedestrians and bicyclists. Eleven of the incidents involved pedestrians and seven involved bicyclists. Five of the incidents resulted in serious injuries. The city has broken a record for most bicyclists hit and killed, with 8 losing their lives on our streets.
• The 17th Annual GermanFest wil be held on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Athenaeum, 401 E. Michigan St. from noon-6 p.m. Tickets are $18 plus online fees at athenaeumindy.org. There will be food and drink available for purchase, live music, and building tours. The Dachsund Dash will be held in the arena throughout the afternoon. There will be a sausage eating contest, plus a beer stein holding competition, kid’s activities and a dog costume contest.
• October is National Recovery Month. Pathway to Recovery recently opened a new facility at 32nd and Central with long-term apartments and space for community meetings to help those who are battling addictions. If you or someone you know needs help, there is help available. The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number is 988, and substance use support is available.
• It’s never too early to get into the Halloween spirit! Kan-Kan Cinema will host the daughter of Vincent Price speaking before a showing of Theatre of Blood, starring her father and Diana Rigg on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. There will be a costume contest, a question and answer session with Ms. Price, and a chance to get an autograph or photo. tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at kankanindy.com. This show will probably sell out, so get your tickets ASAP.
• Indianapolis Scottish Highland Games and Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 from 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. at the Marion Co. Fairgrounds, 7300 E. Troy Ave. Tickets are $18 at the gate, and there will be all things Celtic available — food and merchandise, kid’s activities, dancing, plus a the Highland games and contests. There will also be a free whiskey tasting class.
• Indianapolis Public Libraries will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13 for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and you may have difficulty accessing your account on the evening of Oct. 12 as they perform system maintenance.
