Marion Co. Emergency Management Helps Prepare Citizens for Emergencies

INDIANAPOLIS — September is National Preparedness Month, making it a great time for people in Indianapolis and Marion County to discuss disaster preparedness with friends and family. Marion County residents can text MESA INDY to 67283 for the latest county emergency alerts and severe weather notifications. Residents can follow MCEM on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for tips and best practices on how to get prepared before disasters strike. Check out the MCEM website for a comprehensive collection of preparedness information indy.gov: Disaster Preparedness.
The Marion County Emergency Management (MCEM) is a division of the Metropolitan Emergency Services Agency, it is in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department East District building — the former Eastgate Consumer Mall — at 201 North Shadeland Avenue. Officially established in 2022, MCEM plays a crucial role in keeping everyone — around 880,000 residents and nearly 30 million visitors each year — prepared and safe when disasters strike. Whether it’s dealing with severe weather, floods, tornadoes, or man-made threats, the MCEM team is always ready to plan, respond, recover, and help build resilience for all communities throughout the county.
MCEM plays a crucial role in ensuring residents are prepared for potential emergencies. MCEM is also the local government sponsor for the Marion County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a volunteer program that teaches CERT members skills to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following a disaster where first responders are not immediately available to help. MCEM and its initiatives are vital in equipping first responders, city officials, and residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond when disaster strikes effectively.
