INDIANAPOLIS — The long-awaited Horse Barn for IMPD’s Mounted Patrol unit has been completed and the horses have been moved in. The facility offers modern offices and locker rooms for officers, plus 13 stalls for the horses.
The $2.2 million dollar home offers modern offices and locker rooms for officers. There is a riding arena in the facility as well.
Mounted Patrol is used for crowd control and patrolling streets and parks. They are also good-will ambassadors for the department, visiting community events (and even wearing friendship “bracelets” while patrolling Taylor Swift’s concerts in 2024). They sometimes patrol the east side, where the officers have been seen at the drive-through at Starbucks.
There will be a Community Open House at the brand-new Woodard Van Riper IMPD Mounted Patrol Barn Headquarters on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 4-7 p.m. at 3325 W. Vermont St. Bring the family to meet the Mounted Patrol officers and horses, tour the new barn, connect with IMPD officers, and enjoy snacks, refreshments and more. Enter from Vermont St. Nearest intersection is Vermont and Tibbs, proceed East on Vermont from Tibbs, turn south into lot. Please don’t enter from the south, even if GPS suggests it.
