• United States Postal Office carriers will be hosting a “Stamp Out Hunger” food donation drive on Saturday, May 10. Gleaner’s Food Bank will get the donations from Indianapolis. The Cumberland Post Office is working with Community Outreach Ministry Eastside (COME) Food Pantrym 116 S. Muessing, and donations collected in Cumberland will stay within the community. Just fill up the bag they provide and leave it next to your mailbox.
• Safe Streets Indy noted that in April, there were 60 incidents reported where a car hit either a pedestrian or cyclist in the city. In their monthly report, 47 pedestrians and 13 bicyclists were hit by cars. One incident was fatal. Drivers need to pay attention to the road (not the phone) and pedestrians also need to pay attention before crossing the street.
• The monthly Irvington Neighborhood Bike Ride will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. starting at the Bona Thompson Center, 5350 E. University. This 7 mile ride through Irvington is open to the whole family, but you are responsible for your own safety. It’s a slow roll, not a race. It’s part of the CIBA/Neighborhood Rides initiative. The route map can be found on the Irvington Neighborhood Bike Rides Facebook page.
• Looks like the warmer weather has opened up the potholes the city filled in April. Please report these tire-killers by calling the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 or by visiting the Web site indy.gov/activity/pothole-repair.
• IndyGo plans to install 30 cameras at some of the city’s most dangerous intersections in order to study near-misses between vehicles and pedestrians. The data will be used to determine how safe some intersections really are. Most of the cameras will be installed downtown, but the east side will likely get a few — as will other sides of town.
• Indy Parks offers summer camp programs for many age groups throughout the city. Christian Park, Broad Ripple, and Garfield Arts Center camps are close by, and affordable. Check out the offerings online at indy.gov/activity/indy-parks-day-camps or visit the locations.
• Lawrence will be hosting an International Food Festival on Saturday, May 10 from noon-4 p.m. at Lawrence Civic Plaza, 5710 Lawrence Village Parkway. Food trucks will be on hand with international flavors.
• Indy DPW reports that the archaeology consultant Stantec has identified 674 grave shafts with the Henry St. right-of-way, The excavation portion of land is in the original section of the former Greenlawn Cemetery called the Old Burying Ground. Indy DPW plans to have a public meeting in July to provide a construction progress update on the White River Innovation District, and to share preliminary insights into the archaeology work that is underway.
