INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday, Feb. 3, the Indianapolis City-County Council took up a proposal that would require Indianapolis’ Department of Public Works to change its snow removal policies to include more residential streets. The proposal was introduced by Councilor Jared Evans.
Proposal 69 arose out of last month’s snowstorm which dumped almost 8 inches of snow and left residents stranded on streets that were impassable. In 2020, the department changed its snow removal policies to emphasize connector streets for clearing first, leaving thousands of miles of smaller, residential streets untouched. Earlier, the department would clear residential streets if snows totaled more than six inches, using contractors and smaller trucks to get down the streets.
The City-County Council’s public works committee will meet on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the City-County building to discuss the proposal and perhaps add amendments.
