• Good Shepherd UMC invites everyone to their Community Ham & Bean Supper on Saturday, Feb. 8, 4-7 p.m. The cost is Adults: $10, soup, cornbread, dessert and drink; Children: $5. Proceeds to benefit Wheeler Mission Women and Children’s contingency lunch program. Good Shepherd UMC is located at 2015 S. Arlington Ave.
• “Hidden Gems of Indiana” will be the topic of the Perry Township / Southport Historical Society’s January meeting. The guest speaker is Suzanne Stanis from the Indiana Landmarks Foundation. It will be a great event to learn about some fascination places that you may not have seen. They meet on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Perry Township Education Center, 6548 Orinoco Ave. Enter through the center doors at the northwest corner of the building. Admission is free.
• The City of Lawrence offers a Golden Hour Game Day on Thursdays from 11 a.m.-noon at the Lawrence Community Center, 5301 N. Franklin Rd. Seniors are welcome to come to play board games and make new friends while having fun. Admission is free.
• Free tax preparation begins Friday, Feb. 7 during library hours at the Fort Ben Library by appointment only. You can visit the library at 9330 E. 56th St. to pick up your tax prep packet. This is open to all ages.
• On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Hancock County Library will take donations of gently used books from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The donations are tax deductible. The Greenfield location, at 900 W. McKenzie Rd. is the drop-off site.
• With the bitter cold and snow, the Veal’s Ice Tree is looking great! It is now over 25 feet tall, and the colors are really cool. Since 1961, the Veal family has made ice trees during freezing weather, spraying water over a frame, and adding a safe colorant sometimes to create a really spectacular natural ice sculpture. If you haven’t seen the tree, you should visit it at 6445 Mimosa Lane on the southeast side (take Southeastern south, and it curves into Mimosa). The Veal’s Ice Tree is on Facebook and Instagram, where they give updates to the condition of the tree. Admission is free. It is open to the public from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. every day.
• Every Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Magpie Studio and Gallery offers a free space to create art with like-minded people. Bring your own supplies, grab a cup of coffee or tea, and work on your projects at 206 S. Audubon.
• Devour Indy Winterfest is underway, with many local restaurants offering special menus, speciality cocktails, and more through Feb. 2. Irvington’s Sahm’s Tavern and Shin Dig are participating, and over 150 other restaurants. If you have been dying to try a new restaurant, this is the time to check them out.
