INDIANAPOLIS — Officials with the White River State Park, located at 801 W. Washington St., have announced that they are in the last phase of designing an extension of the park just south of the existing property on the former GM Stamping Plant. The new extension, which will cover 15 acres, will be built in two phases next to the Elanco Animal Health headquarters will be built. The first phase will include an event pavilion, green spaces, a promenade overlooking the White River. The estimated cost for the expansion is $65 million. Financing will come from the state, and an additional amount by the Lilly Endowment.
Construction is expected to start in by the end of this year, and construction of the pavilion to being in spring 2025.
White River State Park encompasses the Indianapolis Zoo, Victory Field, Indiana State Museum, the NCAA Hall of Champions, an IMAX theatre, and the Eiteljorg Museum. Touted as “Indy’s Backyard,” the park receives almost four million visitors, and boasts the Everwise Amphitheater, which holds outdoor concerts in summer.
