Applause!: July 5-11

• After 50 years of service at the Ransburg YMCA, Judy Boak has retired. She was an exceptional leader of their programs, and a friend to all. The family at the Y will miss her terribly.
• The Irvington Garden Club put on a spectacular garden tour this year! A big thanks goes out to the organizers and the volunteers, not to mention the generous homeowners who let 500-plus people wander their yards all afternoon.
• If you love the Christopher Guest mockumentaries, don’t miss Waiting for Guffman at an outdoor screening at Kan-Kan Cinema on Thursday, July 11 at 8:15 p.m. This classic involves a rumor that a big-time Broadway producer is interested in a small-town musical production, and the efforts of the cast to make a great impression — hilarity ensues. Tickets are available online at kankanindy.com and are $10. Be sure to get tickets in advance, as it will likely be sold out if you wait.
• There will be a public information meeting for the proposed U.S. 31 sidewalk project from County Line Rd. to Thompson Rd. on Tuesday, July 9. The proposed project will install Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant sidewalks and curb ramps on both sides of U.S. 31 from County Line Road to Thompson Road in Marion and Johnson counties. The project will also include minor drainage improvements and a signal improvement at U.S. 31 and Shelby Street. The meeting will be held at Indianapolis Public Library – Southport Branch, 2630 E. Stop 11 Rd. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to allow the public to view displays and talk with project personnel prior to a presentation that will begin at. 6:00 p.m. Project team members will be available to answer questions and comment forms will be available.
• The Southside Art League’s Summer Exhibition will be open July 3-Sept. 28 at the Southside Art League Broadway Gallery, 299 E. Broadway, Greenwood. Hours are Wed. – Sat. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be an open house on Friday, July 12 from 6-8 p.m. with refreshments.
• The Chain of Quilts Show put on by the Quilt Connection Guild will be held Friday, July 12 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday July 13 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 6111 Shelby St. Admission is $8. Visit quiltcg.com for more information about upcoming meetings.
• This month’s First Friday events include Circle City Industrial Complex studios from 6-9 p.m. at 1125 Brookside Ave. and Irvington community around 5515 E. Washington St. from 5 p.m. The Harrison Center at 1505 N. Delaware will also be open. Please help support our local artist community!
