INDIANAPOLIS — Christopher Bailey was named Chief of Police of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) on Monday, Feb. 12. Bailey served as the Assistant Chief of the IMPD for the four years prior to his appointment to Interim Chief earlier in 2024. In his 25 years of service with the IMPD and to the citizens of Indianapolis, Chief Bailey has had a profound impact on improving public safety and building police-community partnerships.
Since 2014, Bailey has been a part of the IMPD’s executive leadership team. As the Commander of the IMPD Homeland Security Bureau, Bailey oversaw many of the IMPD’s specialty units and was responsible for the strategic and successful security planning for all major events hosted in the Circle City including the Indy 500, NFL games, and large conferences. In 2017, Bailey transitioned to Deputy Chief of the Criminal Investigations Division. In this role, Chief Bailey worked diligently to combat violent crime across the city by re-establishing the Indianapolis Violence Reduction Partnership and creating the Indianapolis Crime Gun Intelligence Center.
