INDIANAPOLIS — Ground has been broken for the brand-new IMPD Mounted Patrol Barn, a $1.7 million facility that will meet the needs of the Mounted Horse Patrol. The 20,000 square foot facility will be located at 3345 W. Vermont St. and is not just a barn. From state-of-the-art offices to spacious stables, indoor and outdoor riding arenas, this barn is set to become the heart of the IMPD Mounted Horse Patrol.
The IMPD Mounted Horse Patrol is called upon to be good-will ambassadors to police, plus are used for crowd control. On horseback, they bring an incredible sense of safety and warmth to conventions, sporting events, cultural celebrations, and special occasions. They’re the welcoming face of our city, embodying the spirit of care and protection.
The Mounted Horse Patrol consists of three full-time officers, two part-time officers, and seven horses. All mounted officers have the same arrest powers as other IMPD officers.
The new facility has been funded by the Central Indiana Police Foundation and individuals like Marlyne Sexton, Roger Penske, Turner Woodard, and numerous anonymous donors.
