• The Neighborhood Food Collective will begin its monthly summer food giveaways on Saturday, May 20 from 2-3 p.m. at the parking lot at Irvington Plaza, 6201 E. Washington St. The event is free and no sign-up or registration is needed. Other dates for the summer are June 24, July 22, Aug. 26, and Sept. 30. If you, or someone you know, is in need of food, please stop by early!
• Ride the Eastside on Wednesday, May 17 through Grace Tuxedo and Bosart-Brown neighborhoods for a slow roll to promote bicycling as an alternative to cars. Meet at 5:30 p.m. at Tuxedo Baptist Church, 29 Grant Ave. in the parking lot. The ride begins at 6 p.m.
• IMPD is hosting their third annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament Hoops for P.E.A.C.E on Saturday, June 3 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Windsor Village Park, 6510 E. 25th St. Boys and girls ages 14 and 18 can form teams to play against IMPD officers for prizes. • Congratulations to Pathways Over Pogues for their efforts to restore the Nowland Ave. bridge. They were recently featured in Preservation magazine, the national publication for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. If you’re out for a stroll on the east side, you should check out this great bridge in Spades Park (16th and Rural).
• The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is spending $21.2 million to expand the trail to the west side of the White River. The new segment will link the Wholesale District to near westside neighborhoods by adding one mile along South St., then along Kentucky Ave., Henry St. and a new bridge at Henry St. that will be built next year. This is the second expansion of the Cultural Trail in its 10 year history.
• May is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you, or someone close to you, is having mental health issues, know that help is available. Call the Crisis and Suicide Hotline at 988 for compassionate, accessible care.
• May 19 is Bike to Work Day in Indianapolis. There will be bike trains leaving for Lugar Plaza from Indy Cycle Specialist, 5804 E. Washington St. at 7 a.m., Indy Northeast from Boy Scout HQ, 7125 Fall Creek N. Dr. at 6:15 a.m. with a station stop at Starbucks on Fall Creek Parkway and 56th St. at 6:30 a.m. or Broad Ripple at the Monon and Broad Ripple Ave. at 7 a.m. You are also free to bike solo to downtown. Coffee and refreshments will be at Lugar Plaza, plus a blessing of bicycles after 7:45 a.m. Register at Eventbrite.com and search for bike-to-work-day tickets. Admission is free.
• Garfield Park will host its monthly Biergarten on May 18 at 7:30 p.m. The event is free, and children and leashed dogs are welcome. The Biergarten features brews from Garfield Park Brewery. It will take place in the Arts Center rather than the Sunken Gardens, as the fountains undergo repair. The park is at 2432 Conservatory Dr. on the southeast side.
