INDIANAPOLIS — The IndyRent rental assistance program has been relaunched. Started at the beginning of the pandemic with $15 million in CARES Act funding, IndyRent has since distributed over $178 million to 60,000 approved applicants. The program was temporarily paused in late 2022 to retool its framework to be more sustainable over the long term. Applications for the new version will reopen on Thursday, April 27.
The IndyRent program will continue to be court-based and eviction-prevention-focused. Applications will require an eviction case number, a standard in place since July 2022. The maximum income for applicants will be 80% of the area’s median income. The total funding available this round is $6.7 million.
The new application will be shorter and more user-friendly, and still available at IndyRent.org. All tenants will need to submit a new application, even if they have received rental assistance in the past. Tenants will be eligible for up to six months of assistance in this round but can receive no more than 12 total months of assistance going back to April 2021. Over 4,000 individuals who have signaled their interest in applying will receive an e-mail alert when the program reopens.
Six community organizations are partnering with the City on the relaunch of IndyRent: John Boner Neighborhood Centers, Indianapolis Urban League, Edna Martin Christian Center, Community Alliance of the Far Eastside (CAFE), Hawthorne Community Center, and Community Action of Greater Indianapolis, Inc.
The City continues to provide free legal assistance and rental assistance navigators, who assist any tenant facing eviction across Marion County. More information on eviction prevention resources is available at https://www.indy.gov/activity/eviction-prevention-initiatives.
Additional information and FAQs will available at IndyRent.org when the application reopens on April 27.
