IRVINGTON — The construction of Hannah’s Memorial Playground is complete. The staff of School #57 are inviting the community to the official dedication on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 1-3 p.m. at the playground, located at the school at 5435 E. Washington St.
The playground was built with donations from the community to honor the life of Hannah Crutchfield, a 7 year old student at School #57, who was killed crossing Ritter Ave. on Sept. 14, 2021. Her mother Cassandra and a crossing guard, Michael Sykes, were also injured when two aggressive drivers caused a multi-car accident. Hannah’s older sister also witnessed the accident.
Since the accident, the community has called for more policing of the East Washington and Ritter school zones to enforce the lower speed limits. There have also been calls to study the engineering of the corner to see if changes could be made to prevent another tragedy.
