Applause!: July 29-Aug. 4

• A big “thank you!” goes out to the volunteers that made the Benton House Book Sale a big success this year! Thousands of books sorted and carted upstairs, put under the big tent in sweltering heat and humidity — the folks that made it happen really made the sale great this year.
• Indianapolis Liederkranz will host Sommerfest at German Park, 8600 S. Meridian, on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. There will be German beer food, music, dancing and fun for the whole family. Admission is $6 per person, with children under 12 free. Liedenkranz is celebrating its 150th Anniversary this year.
• ZeroLandfill Indy will host a giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at 500 S. Kitley. Drop by for free art supplies, architectural and interior design items, fabrics, stones, random items and much more.
• Gen Con begins Thursday, Aug. 4 and the gamers will be in town in droves through the 7th. This is one of the largest gamer conventions in the world, and the city will be alive with cosplayers and more. The convention events will be held at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium. Badges may still be available; visit gencon.com/indy for more information and last-minute reservations.
• If you and your co-workers are looking to give back to the community, check out NeighborLink Indianapolis. This volunteer organization helps keep poor seniors and the disabled in their homes by providing repairs and clean-ups. They always need volunteers who can paint, clean gutters, make exterior repairs, clean up yards, and provide help to neighbors. • Check out Fourth Friday Late Nights at Coal Yard Coffee, 400 S. Ritter Ave., at 7 p.m. It will be a special night of music, roasting, and conversation among friends and neighbors.
• Halloween in July? We’re in! Tibbs Drive-in is hosting Terror at the Tibbs III July 29-31 with a line-up of horror flicks at the only drive-in movie theater in town. Shows start July 29 at 7:30 p.m. with a line-up to be announced shortly. Visit tibbsdriveintheatre.com for more information.
• The Lincoln Square Pancake House in Greenfield, 118 W. Main St., will host a P.A.W.S. for a Cause fundraiser for the group that helps animals in Hancock County. Eat there and mention to your server that you are participating, and the organization receives 10% of your bill. Or, if you prefer, donations can be made by visiting pawshancock.org
