Neighborhood Food Collective Helps Feed Hungry on East Side

INDIANAPOLIS — With school out, prices going up and food stamps lowered back to pre-pandemic levels, community food pantries are seeing increased usage of food boxes and other sources of free food. In an attempt to help those in need, the Neighborhood Food Collective is doing a food giveaway once a month through September in the Irvington Plaza parking lot. The giveaways will be held on the third Sunday of the month.
Due to Father’s Day falling on the third Sunday this month’s giveaway will be on the 26th of June. The remainder of them will be on the third Sunday of the month. All events are from 2-3 or whenever the food runs out. Because the pantry is first come, first served, participants are encouraged to line up before 1:45 p.m. in the Plaza, 6243 E. Washington St. The plaza is easily accessed by IndyGo buses.
Donations can be made by sending a PM (private message) through the Neighborhood Food Collective Facebook page, or they can call Linda Kennett at 317-258-7835 for drop off.
Donations of canned meats, boxed cereals, peanut butter and jelly, bottled water and powdered or shelf sustainable milk are especially needed.
The NFC is a collaboration of GAIA Works, ICAN Food Pantry and The BIG Red Box Project.
To participate, there is a “no questions asked” policy, and no proof of address or other paperwork.
In addition to the big red box located in front of the Irvington UMC on N. Audubon, the Youth Group at IUMC has set up a box for toiletries, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, and first aid items.
