INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Public Schools has decided that students at Center for Inquiry School 84 (440 E. 57th St.) will be required to wear face masks indoors and on buses for the remainder of the school year, May 24. School 84 is the only school with this requirement.
A surge in COVID-19 cases in the school forced officials to make the decision. Federal officials have also noted a surge in COVID-19 cases in parts of the United States and Indiana. Currently, COVID-19 cases have been increasing rapidly in the past few weeks. As of May 7, cases in Marion County are 19 per 10,000 residents, while Hancock County is 21 per 10,000, and Hamilton County has 34 cases per 10,000 residents.
Officials believe that infections will be reduced after the school year as people, especially children, spend more time outdoors, where transmission rates are much lower.
