Applause!: May 13-19

• Holy Cross Neighborhood Association and Pogue’s Run Waterway Committee will host a community clean-up and kite-flying day on Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Meet in the morning at 1100 E. New York St. to help clean up Highland Park. At 11 a.m., weather permitting, there will be a kite flying session, with the first 30 people getting a free kite.
• 10 East Arts will partner with Meghan Curran, the organizer of the BIG Gay Market that will be held Saturday, May 14 from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the 10 East Arts HUB, 3137 E. 10th St. There will be lots of vendors and free admission.
• Save the Date: The Irvington Dog Walk and Jamboree will be held Sunday, May 22 from 1-3 p.m. Meet up at Black Acre Beer Garden, 5529 Bonna Ave. and take a stroll with your pup around the historic neighborhood with like-minded people. There will be vendors in the parking lot with dog and pet related items, plus services and charities.
• The Pulitzer Prizes were announced on May 9, and a round of applause needs to go out to the local Indianapolis Star staff who were named as finalists in the Local Reporting category for their series on Indiana’s Red Flag laws and the role they played in the FedEx mass shooting in 2021. Tony Cook, Johnny Magdaleno and Michelle Pemberton did a fine job on the series.
• Did you know Indy Parks offers “allotment” gardens at 2400 Tibbs Ave.? The Mayor’s Garden Plots are available in two sizes: 25 x 25 and 50 x 50. The 35 footers are only $30 for those 61 and younger, or $15 for 61 and older. You can grow veggies, flowers, and herbs in these plots for your own use. The 50 footers are $50 for the general public up to 62 years old, and $25 for seniors 62 and up. Call 317-327-7275 (option 2) to reserve a plot. Growing season is here!
• The Indiana Destination Development Corp. has announced funding for 49 public art projects throughout the state. Included are projects close by, including Hotel Tango in Fountain Square and the Madame Walker Legacy Center.
• Cottage Home Neighborhood Association is hosting their annual Home Tour on Saturday, May 14 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. beginning at 714 N. Highland Ave. Tickets are $20 at the door the day of the tour. Visit 15 homes and gardens in the historic neighborhood, visit the History Hub, and watch local artists paint in the neighborhood. Afterward, there will be a Happy Hour and Art Show. This is the major fundraiser for Cottage Home.
• Next weekend, May 20-22, businesses throughout Irvington will join forces to raise money for Hannah’s Memorial Playground. All funds will be donated to the fund set up to improve and expand the playground at School 57 in the memory of Hannah Crutchfield, the student who was killed in the crash at Ritter and E. Washington St. Businesses will be offering specials and donating a portion of sales to support the project.
