INDIANAPOLIS —The project that will this year widen the Monon Trail between 14th and 56th streets was recently kicked off by city officials. With spring on the horizon and outdoor recreation on the minds of residents, the $1.65 million construction project will soon provide more space for walking, biking and commuting by trail.
While work on the most southern portion of the trail between 10th and 14th streets will be completed after North Split construction wraps up, Indy DPW’s project from 14th to 56th streets this year will begin construction as early as next week, to be complete by the end of the 2022.
On Monday, March 21, Indy DPW crews installed signage closing three trail segments and directing users to detour. These segments along the Monon Trail include: from 16th to 22nd streets; from 25th to 28th streets; and from Sutherland Avenue to E. Fall Creek Parkway N. Drive. Indy DPW will release additional information on trail closures and detours in the coming days and as construction progresses.
Efforts on the forthcoming project to similarly widen the Monon Trail from 56th to 96th streets are ongoing, with work currently focused on acquisition of land near the trail alignment.
The Monon Trail is not the only target of trail expansion in 2022. In February, the Board of Public Works approved a design contract for the rehabilitation and extension of the Pleasant Run Trail; this work could see construction as early as 2023 depending on the design timeline. The expansion of Pogue’s Run Trail, a second phase of the Eagle Creek Trail, and 6 additional trail and greenway projects are also forthcoming as a part of the third phase of Mayor Hogsett’s Circle City Forward initiative.
Crews also continue to work this year on the final piece of the Fall Creek Trail, which will complete the connection between downtown Indianapolis and Fort Benjamin Harrison on the far northeast side.
