• Films at the Fort will return on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. This month, see the classic The Wiz, starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Richard Pryor, and Nipsey Russell. Tickets are only $2 and that includes a free bag of popcorn! Visit artsforlawrence.org/events to get tickets in advance. Masks must be worn at all times inside the building.
• The Christmas Tree recycling program at Indy Parks ends Sunday, Jan. 31. Local parks, including Ellenberger, Broad Ripple, and Garfield will accept trees through Sunday, and then you will have to dispose of them privately. Last year, almost 7,000 trees were mulched through the program.
• The Depot Street Park in Greenfield is now open for families to use! Situated just off the Pennsy Trail at 251 Depot Street in downtown Greenfield, the park has a railroad theme and two amphitheaters that will see lots of events and concerts in summer.
• As a follow-up to last week’s item about the Fam-Fam event for Little Flower residents: The movie featured at Kan-Kan will be Paddington, and they offer a discount on tickets for kids under 12. There will be two showings on Feb. 5: 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. General admission is $9 and kids under 12 are $6. Visit the Little Flower Neighborhood Association Facebook page and follow the links.
• Our Lady of Lourdes School offers an open house on Sunday, Jan. 30 from11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at 30 S. Downey, Future students and families are invited to experience the opportunities at OLL Catholic School. Register for a session by e-mail at admissions@ollindy.org or call 317-357-3316.
• The City of Lawrence Chief of Police David Hofmann, will retire effective Friday, Jan. 28. He’s been chief since 2016, but has served as an officer for over 20 years with IMPD. He served as IMPD’s Southwest District Commander. LPD Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff will serve as Interim Chief of Police until Mayor Collier names a replacement.
• Christian Park has a fitness room that residents can use between 1-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The Christian Park Family Center, located at 4200 English Ave. also has a game room open during those hours.
• While the Indianapolis Public Library has cancelled all in-person classes and meetings until further notice, you can still participate in storytimes, classes, and more online at indypl.org. In addition, the library’s shelves are open for browsing with new titles being added all the time.
• More than 30 organizations will host Indiana authors during the year as part of a program offered by the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Awards. Locally, author Maurice Broaddus will speak at IPS Impact Academy, as well as Southport High School with Sharon Biggs Waller. The Exchange at the Indianapolis Urban League will be Robin Lee Lovelace.
