Applause!: Jan. 14-20

• In last week’s Applause, we put the wrong date for the Historic Irvington Community Council. The meeting will be held Tuesday, January 18 at 7 p.m. at the Irvington Presbyterian Church, 55 S. Johnson. On the agenda is the controversial move by Indy Parks to put in an Astroturf playing field after the Dig Indy project is completed at Ellenberger Park. Look for a Facebook post from the council to submit questions before the meeting to ensure everyone’s voice can be heard.
• All in-branch programs and public meetings at Indianapolis Public Library branches are cancelled until further notice except vaccine clinics at the College Ave. and Martindale-Brightwood locations. The library branches will be closed to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17.
• Trash pickup will be on a sliding schedule due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, Jan. 17. Monday trash will be picked up Tuesday, Tuesday on Wednesday, and so on.
• Heavy trash pickup that was scheduled for the third and fourth weeks of December will be eligible for double trash pickup in January. DPW continues to operate on a skeleton staff, so please be patient.
• There will be a seed swap on Saturday, Jan. 22 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, 2003 Pleasant St., Noblesville for individuals interested in growing open-sourced flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables in the area. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Hamilton County Master Gardeners.
• Neighborhood leaders have organized a brief presentation by Wellpath about their new facility at 10th & Emerson followed by an opportunity to ask questions. The event will be held on Monday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. and will take place at Zion Unity Baptist Church, 3855 E. 10th St., or online via Facebook Live. Residents of Little Flower, Community Heights, Emerson Heights and Irvington are invited to hear the plans for this drug addiction recovery center that will be located in the former Family Video store.
• You need to book your space as soon as possible for the maple syrup program at Southeastway Park, which runs Feb. 14-March 11. The program walks you through the maple syrup process from tree to bottle and is very interesting. Programs are $6 per person ages 3 and up and held outdoors in the sugarbush. Visit the Indy Parks Web page to book a group. It fills up fast.
• Jurgen Jungbauer, owner of the Heidelberg Cafe and Bakery in Lawrence, was recently honored with a Federal Republic of Germany German-American Friendship Award.
