INDIANAPOLIS —The American Red Cross continues to experience an emergency blood shortage, causing the blood supply to drop to the lowest post-summer level in least six years. Blood donor turnout has decreased by 10% due to a variety of issues. Hospital demand for blood remains strong. Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urged to make a donation as soon as possible to help meet the needs of patients.
Those who come to donate in October may receive e-gift cards.
To register for a local blood drive, visit redcrossblood.org. There will be a drive on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Saint Simon the Apostle Catholic Church at 8155 Oaklandon Rd. from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. On Wednesday, Oct. 20, the American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 3-7 p.m. at their headquarters at 1510 N. Meridian. O. Monday, Oct. 25 from 2-7 p.m., there will be a drive at Songs of Hope, 102 South 9th St. in Beech Grove.
Adults ages 16 and older can donate blood. Donors must be in good health and weigh at least 110 lbs. You may donate once every 56 days.
