• June 14 is Flag Day. On this day, the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the new nation they were trying to create. The American Legion Speedway Post 500 will have an official flag retirement ceremony at 1926 Georgetown Rd. on Saturday, June 12 from 2:30-4:00 p.m.
• The owners of Paul’s Nursery on Brookville Rd. and Kitley have announced their retirement. The community will miss shopping for beautiful plants and being greeted by the two helper-cats who held down the counter for years.
• The Indy Parks and Recreation Digital Collection is the newest addition to the Library’s Digital Indy archive, which includes collections of documents, images, videos, and recordings that highlight local history. • After all the hullabaloo about the Invasion of the Cicadas, east siders so far have been disappointed that Brood X hasn’t yet made itself known in our local parks or wooded areas. According to the insect experts, the soil in our heavily wooded areas isn’t quite warm enough for them, so they haven’t emerged en masse here — yet. In the next week or so, expect them to Sing the Song of Their People.
• The Talbott Street Art Fair is canceled for this year, but the Harrison Center is going ahead with its 20th Independent Music + Art Festival on Saturday, June 19 from noon-8 p.m. at the center, located at the corner of Delaware and 16th St. The INDIEana Handcraft Exchange will be there as well with vendors selling locally made crafts. This free all-day festival celebrates local music, arts, crafts, and non-profits. The festival also has a Juneteenth tribute featuring a pop-up roller skating rink and drum circle. Food trucks and Sun King beer will be available. Most of the festival is outdoors in the courtyard, and set-ups inside and on the new roof deck. Preregistration is required on Eventbrite.
• On Thursday, June 17 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Garfield Park Sunken Garden, enjoy a Garfield Brewery beverage and a tenderloin at the Biergarten.
