• Congratulations to the West Fork Whiskey Co. on taking home three medals from the 2021 Denver International Spirits Competition. The competition is one of the most prestigious and competitive in the world, with thousands of entries. The east side distillery won gold medals for their Old Hamer 100 Proof and Old Hamer Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and a silver medal for its Old Hamer Straight Rye Whiskey. If you haven’t been to their tasting room at 1660 Bellefontaine St., you should check it out. Hours are from 4-10 p.m. Tues.-Thurs., 4-11 p.m. Fri., 1-11 p.m. Sat., and 1-7 p.m. on Sun.
• A Virtual Celebration of Etheridge Knight will be held Tuesday, May 4 from 7-8 p.m. online thanks to the Indianapolis Public Library’s Center for Black Literature and Culture. The virtual celebration will feature speakers, poets, performers, and family members honoring the legacy of Indianapolis poet Etheridge Knight.Register online at attend.indypl.org
• Friends of Irving Circle is holding a clean-up of the circle on Saturday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. They need volunteers to help mulch, weed, trim shrubbery, and pick up trash. Breakfast will be supplied by Bittersweet for workers. Just come out armed with rakes, hoes, gloves, and a desire to help beautify the neighborhood.
• Celebrate Star Wars Day with a showing of Star Wars: A New Hope on Tuesday, May 4 from 7-10 p.m. at Victory Field. The right field video board will be the screen. Limited $5 parking will be available at the Victory Field Parking Lot. Price for tickets are $12.50 and up and everything is socially distanced. • Speaking of Victory Field, the Indianapolis Indians will be gracing the field beginning May 11. They’ll play the Toledo Mud Hens for Opening Night. Get your tickets at the Web site above. • Paws & Think, an organization that works to train therapy dogs, is celebrating 20 years of service on May 5. The organization has helped over 55,000 people in those 20 years.
• Indy Parks needs to hire lifeguards for this summer! Applicants must be at least 16 years old. Those applying for lifeguard positions must pass a lifeguard test and attend training. Training costs $35 and scholarships are available to help cover the cost. Visit parks.indy.gov for more information or call the Service Center at 317-327-PARK. Pools cannot open without enough people to keep swimmers safe!
• Congratulations to the Martin University graduates who will get their diplomas on May 15. Twenty-seven students will receive their bachelor’s degrees, and 19 will be awarded master’s degrees. At the ceremony, Martin University will award honorary doctorates to Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever), and DuJuan A. McCoy (CEO of Circle City Broadcasting, LLC).
