Local Postal Worker Seeks Help to Create Memorial Garden to Honor Slain Carrier

Postal worker Joe Berry is seeking help to memorialize Angela Summers, a postal worker who was shot and killed while on her route on the east side on April 27. She passed by a home with a loose dog in the yard, and the occupant confronted her. Summers maced the assailant before he pulled out a gun and shot her. She was taken to a local hospital where she later died. The assailant was arrested and is awaiting trial.
Mail to the address had been curtailed and the occupant had been warned that mail would not be delivered when the loose dog was present in the yard. Every year, thousands of mail carriers are bitten by dogs. If a carrier feels threatened by a dog or the dog is loose, the owner may be asked to pick up mail at the post office.
Joe is seeking a place where they can build a garden in the community in her memory. The 45-year-old postal worker walked routes on the east side, including the near eastside and Irvington. Joe worked with her and noted that fellow carriers at the Linwood post office were devastated by the loss of a friend and co-worker.
Anyone who would like to help is encouraged to contact Joe at 317-252-3961 or e-mail rjcrumpet@hotmail.com.
