INDIANAPOLIS — As efforts continue to contain the coronavirus, The Indianapolis Public Library has announced the postponement of all public programs and the continued closure of all Library facilities until further notice.
Programs impacted in April include the Marian McFadden Memorial Lecture with award-winning author/illustrator Kadir Nelson and appearances by authors Sarah Urist Green and Nikki Grimes, with efforts being made to reschedule for later this year. Other events such as the Indy Library Store Book Sale, U.S. Census help sessions, and the Library’s many storytimes and computer classes are canceled. Delayed will be the grand opening of the new Martindale-Brightwood Branch and the groundbreaking for the new West Perry Branch.
While the Library remains closed, patrons are encouraged to visit the Library online 24/7 at indypl.org to access a vast collection of eBooks, streaming videos and other electronic resources, all free with the use of a Library card. Marion County residents ages 18 or older can apply for a Library card online. In response to increased demand during this time, the Library recently allocated additional resources to enhance its offerings of electronic materials for all ages.
Parents can check out the Library website’s blog for book suggestions and recommended activities to engage children, as well as links to homework help and subject-based research topics. The blog is also being updated regularly to share lesser-known Library resources like genealogy research tools, DIY help, hobbies and crafting, and off-screen activities for families. Library officials stress that any overdue items will have extended due dates until the Library reopens. Any items placed on hold will remain for patrons to pick up upon reopening. Also, free reference service, staffed by Library resource specialists, is available at 317-275-4184.
