• Congratulations to Lawrence Police Dept. Officer Jason Heiney for winning LPD’s Officer of the Year on Saturday, Feb. 22. Officer Heiney has a graduate degree in Criminology and a U.S. Army veteran. He serves in the Operations Division and is a member of LPD’s SWAT Team.
• The Irvington Historical Society will be hosting a cool new Photographer’s Club of Warren Central High School exhibition at the Bona, 5350 University Ave. The exhibit will be open March 7-April 26. There will be an opening reception Saturday, March 14 from 6-9 p.m. where visitors can meet the artists and enjoy nibbles provided by the Walker Career Center Threshold culinary students. Come on out and support young talent!
• Kids ages 6-12 are invited to a Tortilla Cooking Class on Tuesday, March 3 at 4 p.m. at the Brightwood Branch, 2435 N. Sherman Dr. If your child has a true wheat allergy, please do not take them to this class.
• On Saturday, March 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., bring the kids to Cat Head’s 10 East location, 3125 E. 10th St., for an open house of free art making. Everyone will leave with a customized screen print and a pin. All ages are welcome.
• The Kids Voice Mobile Law Clinic takes place at John Boner Neighborhood Center, 2236 E. 10th St., on the second Monday of every month from 4 to 7 p.m. at Shepherd Community Center, 4107 E. Washington St., on the first Tuesday of every month from 3 to 6 p.m. The mobile legal clinic offers free legal advice and help with legal forms in areas of law such as divorce, custody, adoption, child support, and other family law issues. Translators will be on-site. The Shepherd Community clinic will be held on Tuesday, March 3 and the Boner clinic will be held on March 9.
• Little Flower Catholic Church begins its Fish Fry Fridays on Friday, Feb. 28 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Little Flower is located at 4720 E. 13th St. Our Lady of Lourdes will also begin its Lenten Fish Fry on Friday, Feb. 28 from 5-7 p.m. OLL is located at 5333 E. Washington St. Other Catholic churches in the area will also be offering Lenten meals on Friday, so check with your local place of worship.
• Arts For All is hosting a Magic Flashlight Drawing program on Saturday, March 7 between noon-5 p.m. at Garfield Park Arts Center, 2432 Conservatory Dr. Kids are invited to draw a scene in magic marker on a plastic baggie to create a unique image with a flashlight. This activity is self-guided and free. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
• INDOT has announce big plans for highway repairs and construction beginning in April. Projects affecting the east and south sides include construction on I-70 eastbound and westbound from the north split to I-465 beginning and May and running to October. INDOT will also be replacing two bridges on the south side — I-65 over Keystone Ave. and over Little Buck Creek.
