INDIANAPOLIS — BlueIndy, the electric car-sharing service that began in 2015, has announced that it will end its collaboration with the City of Indianapolis on May 21, 2020. The decision to close BlueIndy was made after a careful analysis of usage. It was determined that the service was not reaching the level needed to be economically viable. BlueIndy is a subsidary of Bollore Group, a French transporation company.
BlueIndy’s original goal was to have 500 all-electric vehicles and 200 stations throughout the Indianapolis metro area, and provide short-term rentals to city-dwellers and visitors. The city provided $6 million to support BlueIndy, and Indianapolis Power & Light contributed $3 million to the venture. It has yet to be determined what will happen to the existing power stations and parking spaces currently used by BlueIndy.
