INDIANAPOLIS — The former home of Colonial Bakery on 24th St. and Winthrop on the north side will be remediated to residential standards and marketed for redevelopment.
The site was used by the Colonial Baking Company for warehouse storage, truck loading, and truck repair from the mid-1950s through the 1990s, with trucking activity on the site continuing until 2007. Due to this historic site usage, portions of the surface and near-surface soils on site are contaminated by heavy metals and petroleum compounds. To address this contamination, the city and Renew Indianapolis have been awarded a $345,000 Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) subgrant through the Indiana Finance Authority with the State of Indiana. Through this grant, approximately 4,500 tons of surface soil will be removed, to a depth of two feet below grade, including removal of asphalt located in the southern portion of the site. The remediation is being conducted by IWM Consulting Group, LLC, and is projected to be completed by the end of September 2019.
