• An exhibit of art works by students of the Oberting Art School can be viewed at the Bona Thompson Center, 5350 University Ave., from Sept. 7 – 29. The Bona is free and open to the public every Wednesday 1-3 and Saturday/Sunday 1-4. The show features works in all media. Donna Oberting has been an eastside art teacher over 50 years. An opening reception is planned for Saturday, Sept. 7 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• The Presbyterian Women of the Church at Irvington Presbyterian Church is selling mums as part of their Country Fair fundraiser. Mums can be ordered from now until Sunday, Sept. 15. Pick up will be at the church on Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which is the day of the Country Fair. Mums in pink, yellow, orange, red, or white are being sold in 9-inch pots at $10 each. Prepaid orders by cash or checks payable to PWC may be made at the church. Profits from the mum sale and all Country Fair activities go to PWC mission projects.
• Congratulations go out to the eastside Indy Best Things winners in the food and drink category. Centerpoint Brewing Co. at Circle City Industrial Complex took home Gold for best bartender (Amanda Wallace) and Best Brewery. Hotel Tango Whiskey in Fountain Square won Platinum for Best Cocktail Bar, and Dorman Street won Platinum for Best Dive Bar. Beach Bum Barbecue was voted favorite food truck, and Wyliepalooza in Irvington took the gold for best Ice Cream. Coal Yard Coffee in Irvington was chosen best local coffee shop, and Jockamo took the platinum for best pizza. Best new restaurant was 10th Street Diner, and the Mug’s tenderloin was deemed second best in the city.
• Arts for Lawrence will be offering an improv comedy class on Wednesdays from Sept. 11-Oct. 30 at Theatre at the Fort. Taught by Anthony Smith, this eight week class goes over the fundamentals of improvisation. No experience is needed. Cost is $200, and the class is suitable for ages 16 and up. • The Robson-Voorhees Neighbors Association will meet Saturday, August 31 at 11am at the Minnie Hartmann Center (on Robson between Kealing and Sherman).
• Save the Date: Holler on the Hill returns to Garfield Park Sept. 21-22 with lots of great music in the park and local venues. There is limited seating, with single day general admission lawn and reserved section tickets available. Two-day passes are $120 in advance for reserved seating, general admission $90 in advance.
