For over fifty years, the Irvington Historical Society has hosted an annual Irvington Ice Cream Social. The 2019 social promises to be loaded with great food, live music and fun for all ages. This is a small old-fashioned summer social, designed to inform people about the Irvington Historical Society, about Irvington’s century and half of history, and to raise funds to keep our museum admission free.
The annual Ice Cream Social will be held Sunday August 4, from noon – 4 p.m. in front of the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 University Ave. Downey Ave, will be closed between University and Ohmer, so that the White River Jazz Band can set up, and visitors can hang out in the shade of the trees on the front lawn and listen to free music. Parking will be available at the large lot just north of the Bona.
In addition to the music, Sundae’s Ice Cream, cupcakes from Simply Divine, and sliders and sides from Beach Bum BBQ will be on offer. This year’s social will feature a Vintage Market with craft and vintage items, and local henna artist, witches from the Irvington Black Hat Society, and children’s activities. Irvington artist Andrea Light, the creator of one of Irvington’s signature signal box paintings, will be creating sidewalk chalk art with the kids — chalk will be provided.
Irvington artists have been invited to create some small art within Irvington, and then sell it on the hill at the Bona Thompson. There’s no entry fee and the artists keep the profit from the sale. Registration and outline is at: https://forms.gle/Pmt8YvwTVHhgZSig6. Participation is not limited by age, but minors need to be working with an adult.
Inside the Bona Center, there will be book signings from Irvington and Indiana authors, including Irvington author Julie Young signing her latest book, a true crime story about the Burger Chef Murders in Indiana. Irvington resident and Vintage Irvington blogger, William Gulde will be on hand to sign the brand new edition of his Irvington in 1910 book. Noted children’s author, Adriane Doherty will be on hand to sign her books, Sweet Dreams Indiana and the ABC INDIANA Board Book. Chris Edwards will be signing his children’s biographies, including All About Helen Keller and All About Stephen Hawking, while Todd Outcalt will sign copies of All About Martin Luther King, Jr. and his Indiana Wineries guidebooks and a Husband’s Guide to Breast Cancer.
Finally, if it is sports that interest you, Susan Hutchens will be on hand to sign her late husband’s books, When I Grow Up, I Want to Play for Indiana, and When I Grow Up I Want to Play for Purdue and the Indianapolis Indians’ Chairman Emeritus, Max Schumacher will be there to show up to sign copies of his new memoir, Extra Innings: My Life in Baseball.
While you are visiting the Bona, be sure to check out the exhibits inside which include A Century of Cameras, Irvington Homes: Steeped in History, Military Tattoos, International Harvester, the West Baden Angels, and the Ghouls of Irvington.
