BEECH GROVE — According to the National Weather Service, Indianapolis, Beech Grove experienced an EF-1 tornado on Saturday, June 15 at approximately 7:26 p.m. The tornado began southwest of Beech Grove, crossing Emerson Ave. and Churchman before dissipating. No injuries were reported, but buildings, houses, and an apartment building were damaged. Peak winds were estimated at 100 mph.
The Beech Grove tornado was one of nine reported in Indiana on June 15. Another tornado in Marion County touched down, estimated as an EF-0 on the southeast side near Raymond St. and Brookville Rd. shortly after the reported touchdown in Beech Grove. Peak winds were estimated to be 70 mph, and significant damage was reported to several outbuildings and minor tree damage near Brookville.
Other tornados were reported in Greene County (EF-2), Elletsville (EF-2), and Freedom/Spencer (EF-1). No injuries were reported.
According the NWS Indiana averages 20-21 tornadoes a year. Indiana had 35 tornadoes in 2016 alone. Tornadoes do occur year round but are most likely from April to June.
