INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Chief Bryan Roach recently announced command staff changes in addition to the merit-based promotion of 28 officers. These staffing changes aim to fill agency needs identified as critical to the City’s efforts to engage youth and prevent violence during the warmer summer months.
Catherine Cummings, a more than 20-year veteran of the IMPD, has been appointed Major of the Criminal Investigations Division. Major Cummings brings a diverse range of experience to this role, including more than 5 years as a Homicide Detective, assignments in Missing Persons, Sex Crimes, and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), as well as the Public Information Office and a supervisory role on East District. Cummings was also responsible for developing the City’s Mobile Crisis Assistance Teams (MCAT) program, an innovative approach to crisis response that pairs IMPD officers with mental health clinicians. Major Cummings is the first woman on the IMPD to hold this post.
Former Major of the Investigations Division Harold (Steve) Turner will return to Night Watch to serve as Commander, working to coordinate the efforts of district late shifts and ensure the patrol officers who serve during the late night and early morning hours have the resources they need to keep Indianapolis neighborhoods safe. Over his career, Major Turner has built connections with residents as the LGBTQ Liaison and served in roles ranging from District Shift Lieutenant to Professional Standards Commander.
