• Congratulations to Warren Central’s Brandon Warren, who organized last year’s citywide peace march and community day after the murder of friend and fellow Warren Central student Dijon Anderson. He was recently named one of America’s top ten volunteers of 2018 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Indiana’s top two youth volunteers of 2019, Tatum Parker, 18, of Indianapolis and a student at North Central High School, and Adrian Huizar, 15, of Michigan City, were honored for their outstanding volunteer service during the 24th annual presentation in Washington D.C.
• Wishing East District IMPD Officer Eric Rosenbaum a speedy recovery after being shot on Sunday, May 5 while attempting to subdue a shoplifter at the east side Lowe’s on Post and 25th St.
•The Hoosier State Train service connecting Indianapolis to Chicago will be suspended as of July 1. The State of Indiana will not fund the service in the current budget. Cardinal Trains and Amtrak Thruway Buses will continue to provide services to Chicago.
• The Eastside Marketplace farmer’s market has moved to its summer location just outside Coal Yard Coffee, 5547 Bonna Ave. The market is held on Mondays from 5-8 p.m. and features local produce and handmade items.
• Indy Fringe will be celebrating 15 years of bringing fun to Indianapolis on Sunday, May 19 with a fundraiser and performance by Rock E Bassoon, the world’s only electric rock bassoon band. The fundraiser will be held at their headquarters, 719 E. St. Clair St., with grounds open at 4 p.m. and performances at 6 p.m. Tables and chairs will be provided, and there will be a cash bar. Tickets are $12 and are available online at www.indyfringe.org
• There will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the Fort Ben Cultural Campus on Monday, May 13 at 3 p.m. at the Musical Swings installation, 8950 Otis Ave. And save the date for a Swingathon on Saturday, May 25 beginning at 11 a.m. Up to 55 people can swing for an hour if they raise $100 for Arts for Lawrence. Participants will receive 3 lines of text on a brick in the cultural campus. Whoever raises the most donations will receive 2 free 2020 season tickets and swag. Register at artsforlawrence.org
• Local STEM (science, technology, electronics, math) schools were recently certified, include Mary Evelyn Castle Elementary in Lawrence, and Southport Elementary in Perry Township.
• Monon Trail users should begin seeing preliminary work on the widening project slated for 2020. Expect construction equipment all along the trail through May 19.
