INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers participating in public safety basketball league recently won the Atlanta, Georgia tournament, and became Number 1 ranked team in the nation.
The National Law Enforcement and Public Safety basketball league is comprised of law enforcement officers, Federal agents, and firefighters from across the nation. The teams are ranked by the number of games won and participation in tournaments.
This is not the first time the Indiana Team has made waves, as they have won the gold medal at the World Police and Fire Games, won other tournaments across the nation, as well as placed in the final four of other brackets. In November of 2018, they achieved a Final Four finish.
The team will compete in the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver, Canada in June of this year, as well as the Memphis Tournament in August, and the Dallas National Tournament in November.
Along with forming and playing in the National League, IMPD Detective Sydney McDaniel established the charity game “Hoops and Heroes” with Officer Rodney White in 2015, where IMPD plays against IFD to raise money for the Julian Center for Domestic Violence Victims. They have raised over $160,000 since the inaugural event and it continues to grow each year. The event takes place each October during Domestic Violence Awareness month and features a family friendly atmosphere with games and fun activities before the game.
