INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis’ newest outdoor play space opened officially Oct. 18. Commons Park, located at 2204 East New York St. on the city’s east side, features a greenspace, seating, and other play structures.
The quarter-acre property was formerly home to the Outlaws Motorcycle Gang. In 2012, then-U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett led a raid that resulted in the arrest of dozens of people connected to the Outlaws, effectively dismantling a crime organization that was responsible for rampant violence and drug activity on the east side.
The Department of Metropolitan Development acquired the property after the 2012 raid and, earlier this year, the Metropolitan Development Commission voted to turn it over to Indy Parks to lead the effort in beautifying and activating the space.
Commons Park’s playground will be complete after the final installation of equipment and the sof-tile surface. Amenities will also include swings, a spinner, a BBQ grill, and concrete table tennis.
