Scholarship Renamed for Mary Moriarty Adams

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis City-County Councillor Blake Johnson announced that the scholarship program he and his wife Natalie Clayton launched in 2016 to recognize eastside emerging leaders will now be named the “Mary Moriarty Adams Memorial Scholarship,” in honor of the longtime City Councilwoman and revered public servant who passed away last month.
“Mary Moriarty Adams was fierce, honest, and unflinching in her commitment to serving others, and she set a powerful example of what it means to work relentlessly to make our world a better place,” said Councillor Johnson. “She is exactly the type of uncommon leader we hope these young people will aspire to be. She was my friend and mentor, and I’m honored that this program will bear her name.”
Mary Moriarty Adams served for 28 years on the Indianapolis City-County Council, including leadership as the Chairwoman of the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee. She passed away earlier this year.
Since 2016, a total of $40,000 has been awarded though the scholarship to 17 eastside students. The scholarship is made possible using a portion of Councillor Johnson’s salary, and thanks to the additional support of local entrepreneur Chris Baggott, IPS Board of Commissioners President Mike O’Connor, Community Hospital East, Citizens Energy Group, Black Acre Brewing Company, Central Indiana Community Foundation, and individual donations from community members.
Applications for the 2019 Mary Moriarty Adams Memorial Scholarship will be available in late November.
